Congratulations - 5 Pikes Peak Ascent / Marathon Runners Joined Us at Eastholme B&B, Cascade CO

This past weekend was the 55th running of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. See our previous blog post for race details and stats. We were honored to have five runners join us for the weekend while they competed in the two events. Our hats are off to them all for an incredible effort. Running in these races is a special moment and one to be proud of.

Michael:  Definitely the most difficult thing I have ever done.  I loved every minute of it, can't wait for next year!

Jeremiah:  What comes to mind is, "Beautiful Pain".  While I left little pieces of myself out on the trail, I'm taking with me the grandeur of the mountain.  Until next time!

Jay:  Definitely America's Challenge.  Love the challenge.  Definitely the most difficult but well worth it.  Would do it again one day.  Will never complain about a hill again.  When my ironman friends call me crazy, I must be!

Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon this wkend 8/21-22, Eastholme B&B Cascade CO

Well, it’s almost time again for the big running races. This coming weekend marks the 55th running. For those not familiar with the events, the Ascent is a one-way race UP Pikes Peak for a total of 13.32 miles AND a VERTICAL gain of 7,815 feet!  That race occurs on Saturday. And if that’s not enough, lots of folks come back the next day (Sunday) and run the Marathon … you guessed it, UP first and then back DOWN. That’s 26.64 miles and 15,630 feet of combined elevation gain/loss!  And of course this is all occurring between 6,300 feet and 14,115 feet!  Runners range from 16 to 89 years young!

Course records times are currently:
Ascent:      Male  2hr, 1min, 6 sec     Female   2hr, 33min, 31sec
Marathon:   Male  3hr, 16min, 39sec   Female   4hr, 15min, 18sec

Only 1,800 runners are allowed for the Ascent and 800 for the Marathon. Registration this year for the Marathon filled within 45min of opening.

This year holds a couple special events as well. The 2010 Pikes Peak Ascent has been awarded the 7h annual World Mountain Running Associations (WMRA) Long Distance Challenge. The Challenge is one of the WMRA’s premiere racing events, bringing together athletes from around the globe to compete for team and individual prizes. Last year’s Challenge was held in Austria. Previous hosts included Switzerland, France, and Great Britain. The U.S. also hosted in 2006 with the Pikes Peak Marathon. The event will be hosted in Slovenia in 2011.

The 2010 Pikes Peak Marathon was also Selected for Skyrunner® World Series event. Fourteen international races make up the 2010 Skyrunner® World Series calendar. Some 7,000 participants from at least 37 countries will take part in this unique high-altitude circuit uniting the most prestigious mountain races under the auspices of the International Skyrunning Federation. To concentrate the competition among top athletes, five major races have been selected together with nine trials. The Pikes Peak Marathon will be one of the five major races along with premier races in France, Italy, Spain and Malaysia.
